The consequences of the catastrophic earthquake that occurred on July 26, 1963 at 5:17 am on the residents and buildings of Skopje were catastrophic.
1,070 residents of Skopje lost their lives, 3,330 were seriously injured, and about 200,000 were left homeless.
According to written documents, the Skopje earthquake of July 26, 1963, in which the city lost 82.4% of its administrative value, is the deadliest earthquake to have occurred on the Balkan Peninsula.
Many significant, representative and monumental buildings were completely or severely damaged. Here it should be mentioned:, the Railway Station, the National Bank, the Macedonian National Theater, the Central Committee of the Macedonian Communist Party, the City Assembly, the Officers' Home, the Idadija Municipal Building, the Secretariat of the Macedonian Government and others.
The building of the Federation of Trade Unions of Macedonia (Rabotnicki Dom), built in 1958 by the great Macedonian architect Slavko Brezovski, survived the earthquake and was one of the few functional buildings at that time.
With its monumentality and solid construction, the Rabotnicki Dom is one of the symbols of post-earthquake Skopje.
