The Macedonian Police Union (MPS) has officially addressed the Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia and all parliamentary groups with a request to include funds in the Budget for the next fiscal year to increase salaries by at least 20% for all employees in the Ministry of Interior (MVI), the National Security Agency (ANB), the Intelligence Agency (AR) and the Financial Police Directorate (UFP).
The Union emphasises that police officers and other security officers have been facing a serious decline in purchasing power for years, with their salaries not reflecting the risk and responsibility that the profession carries.
"Police officers in Macedonia have the lowest salaries in the region and compared to neighbouring countries, which creates additional existential uncertainty," the MPS statement reads.
The Union recalls that police officers are faced with the inability to cover basic living expenses - accommodation, food, transportation and education of their children, and that this situation is reflected in the motivation and efficiency of the internal security system.
"Being a police officer does not just mean wearing a uniform - it is a service to the citizens, to the state and to the rule of law. The security of the state rests on satisfied and motivated police officers," the Union emphasises.
The MPS demands that the Government and the Parliament provide a regular mechanism for annual salary adjustments in accordance with inflation and economic indicators, and to initiate a process of salary harmonisation with the countries of the region, with the aim of gradually achieving European standards.
The MPS points out that this request is not only financial, but also an act of recognition and respect for those who risk their safety every day in the service of the state and citizens.
The MPS expects understanding and support from the parliamentary groups within the framework of the budget debates and amendment processes, calling for social solidarity with members of the police and security services.
